![]() Fleet Facts
Founded in 1984, Calpine operates 92 power plants that are capable of delivering approximately 28,000 megawatts of clean, reliable electricity to customers and communities in 20 U.S. states and Canada. Houston-based Calpine is a major U.S. power company that is safely and responsibly meeting the needs of an economy that demands cleaner, more fuel-efficient and dependable sources of electricity. Calpine stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CPN. Nation's Largest IPP
Calpine produces more power each year than any other pure-play independent power producer. In 2010, the company’s fleet generated more than 94 million megawatt hours of electricity. Our aim is to provide customers with reliable service. We go to great lengths to manage our outages, reduce our downtime and deliver on commitments to provide power when and where it is needed. Modern and Efficient
Calpine’s fleet of natural gas-fired plants is among the youngest and cleanest in the country. The average plant age is about 11 years old, and the fleet emits fewer greenhouse gases per megawatt hour generated than any other independent power producer in the United States. Calpine’s fleet of combined-cycle and cogeneration plants is the nations's largest. Highly efficient combined-cycle plants use both natural gas and steam to produce electricity. Cogeneration plants also produce steam for industrial use. Safety: A Top Operating Priority
Calpine employees embrace a Safety First culture as evidenced by consistently low lost-time incident rate data. The company has delivered first quartile safety performance for each of the past five years compared to its peers. A safety committee of key top executives and plant personnel from various operating regions leads the charge to continued safety improvement and awareness. Scale in 3 Major Markets
Following its acquisition of Conectiv Energy, which added 19 new plants in the Eastern PJM region, Calpine’s portfolio now has significant scale in three major power markets: Texas, California and the Mid-Atlantic. With a modern, diverse and flexible fleet of state-of-the-art plants, Calpine is poised to benefit from price and volume improvements in all three areas as the country’s economic recovery strengthens. Clean and Green
A commitment to environmental excellence in power generation is fundamental to Calpine’s corporate philosophy and culture. Calpine operates the largest single renewable geothermal power resource in the world at The Geysers. At The Geysers, steam produced in naturally occurring underground reservoirs is brought to the surface where it drives turbines to produce electricity. Available 24 hours a day, this important renewable resource poses none of the grid integration challenges of other renewables. Show:
