Calpine has had a long history of partnering with community organizations, as well as funding community and educational programs that seek to change lives and strengthen the fabric of our society. Calpine and its employees have been honored to receive a number of awards, supportive resolutions and special recognition from noteworthy organizations for our ability to conduct business in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, for our innovation and for our community involvement.
Combined Cycle Journal Best Practices Awards
In March 2008, Combined Cycle Journal magazine announced that the Morgan Energy Center won two awards at the Combustion Turbine Operations Task Force's Turbine Users Forum in Savannah, Ga., including Best Practices awards for excellence in the categories of Operations & Maintenance and Safety. Best Practices represent reliable methods and procedures that enable plants to increase efficiency and availability and to decrease environmental impact and the cost of electricity production on a predictable and repeatable basis.
Superior Achievement for Workplace Safety
In February 2008, the Morgan Energy Center in Decatur, Ala., received the State of Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Award of Superior Achievement for Workplace Safety. The award recognized the plant for incurring no lost-time accidents for the past 24 or more consecutive months.
OSHA Star Worksite Award
In 2007, Calpine's Hidalgo Energy Center in Edinburg, Texas, was named a Star Worksite under the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The VPP Star certification is OSHA's highest level of recognition for outstanding efforts by an employer and its employees to achieve a level of excellence in occupational safety and health at their worksites.

Green Business Designation
In 2007, Calpine's Watsonville Cogeneration Plant, received a Green Business Designation from the Monterey Green Business program for Santa Cruz and Monterey counties on California's central coast. The program recognizes facilities that conduct their day-to-day operations in terms of being environmentally aware, promoting energy efficiency and reducing any and all waste streams.
California Department of Conservation Award
Calpine's renewable geothermal operation at The Geysers received the 2006 Outstanding Lease and Facility Maintenance Award from the California Department of Conservation for environmental cleanup, infrastructure maintenance and safety. The award marks the fifth consecutive year Calpine has received such recognition. Calpine is one of only two geothermal operators to ever receive this award.
University of Colorado Award
The University of Colorado Tim Wirth Chair on Environmental and Community Development Policy honored Calpine in 2004 with an award for its leadership in producing electricity in an environmentally responsible manner.
Clean Air Award
The American Lung Associations of the Bay Area awarded Calpine and its Geysers geothermal facility its 2004 Clean Air Award for Technology Development. The ALA cited Calpine's exceptional innovation, improvement of air quality and a partnership with the city of Santa Rosa. "The Geysers reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, which is a top clean air goal of the American Lung Association," said the organization.

Energy Star Award
Calpine's Deer Park Energy Center (Texas) received the 2003 Energy Star Combined Heat and Power Award, issued by the U.S. environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Calpine "demonstrated leadership in energy supply with a cost-effective, high-efficiency facility that uses 30 percent less fuel than onsite thermal generation and purchased electricity," said the EPA.

Power Magazine’s Top Ten Power Magazine listed Calpine's Los Medanos Energy Center in Pittsburg, California, as one of the top ten power plants for 2003. According to Power Magazine, "Los Medanos goes beyond just meeting the strictest of California's environmental standards." Working in concert with a local water district, the plant treats and reuses its tertiary water for cooling and makeup, relieving the stress on California's dwindling water supplies."
Baytown Named a U.S. Dept. of Energy Showcase Facility Calpine's Baytown Energy Center in Texas was recognized in 2003 as a showcase facility by the U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the State of Texas and Texas Industries of the Future. Calpine was applauded for the energy efficiency of its modern combined-cycle plants, which are viewed as helping to improve air quality in the Houston-Galveston area.
