Safety and Health at Calpine
At Calpine, we take matters of workplace safety and health very seriously. Our business of building, operating and maintaining electric power generation facilities can be a dangerous trade, but one that we know can be done safely every day.
Our safety performance is outstanding - the result of comprehensive training, well-designed safety management systems, effective preventive maintenance, stringent standards for safe, efficient plant operations and the thoughtful daily safe behaviors of each and every person at Calpine.
Four of Calpine’s generating facilities have been designated as Star worksites under the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) administered by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Star certification under the VPP program is OSHA's highest level of recognition of outstanding efforts by an employer and its employees to achieve exemplary occupational safety and health at their worksites. Under the VPP, management, labor, and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. OSHA's verification includes an application review and a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of OSHA safety and health experts.

At Calpine, our culture provides a workplace environment that promotes excellence in safety every day. Safety is a core value at Calpine. Our safety management systems reinforce our safety culture by focusing on total compliance with all regulations, as well as the identification and adoption of other, more protective, voluntary best management practices.
Our Safety Management Strategy and Systems
Our corporate culture strongly values the entrepreneurial spirit - achieving excellence in an independent and practical manner. Our safety risk management strategy seeks to build on our core value of safety, and this strong foundation of entrepreneurial spirit to further enhance our corporate safety performance. A few key elements of our safety management strategy and systems include:
We regularly benchmark our corporate safety business processes, strategy, systems, standards, organization and performance with that of dozens of large corporate safety leaders across American industry.
We seek to continuously improve our safety procedures based on scientific evidence, practicality, sound judgment and adoption of best available practices that exceed regulatory requirements.
Our internal Calpine Safety Standards are the vehicle through which we assure our operations comply with mandated minimum regulatory requirements, and encourage the entrepreneurial development or replication of other innovative best management practices.
We regularly use both internal and external safety professionals to audit all operations using standardized protocols.
Leading indicators of safety management excellence are incorporated into the goals and compensation systems.
We monitor and review the safety management systems and performance of our contractors, and exercise our contractual rights to encourage contractor safety excellence while on Calpine property.
Our safety staff is a matrix organization for efficiency and effectiveness. Corporate safety staff is focused on corporate governance and best practice replication across organizational units. Business unit safety staff is focused on management systems and the efficient delivery of effective professional services. Key accountability for safety is integrated into operations management at each facility. Total employee involvement in daily safety management activities is strongly encouraged.
Our Safety Performance
Calpine's corporate-wide Lost Time Incident and Total Reportable Incident rates, the primary indicators of industrial safety performance, are routinely among the best in our industry.
Our Safety Policy
We consider the proactive management of safety and health risks to be a key element of our personal and company integrity, ethical behavior, corporate social responsibility and long-term business success - and simply the right thing to do.
