Features
Decoupled renewable power enables you to receive reliable, high-value power from the grid plus renewable energy certificates, or "green tickets" matched against all or a portion of that power. This helps break down geographic boundaries. It means you don’t have to be located next to our power plants in Northern California to take advantage of this resource. With this energy offering, the environmental attributes are traded separately or unbundled from the power.
This product offers a number of advantages. You can depend on power from the standard grid, and be assured of your supply with power backed by Calpine-owned assets. You can satisfy your environmental goals with green attributes generated by our geothermal assets, and manage your costs with our flexible pricing. Further, this solution helps you comply with government mandates. It also promotes the further development of new renewable resources.
Renewable Energy Certificates – Whether they’re called green tags, green tickets, tradable renewable certificates, or what Calpine calls them — Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) — the U.S. market for these offerings continues to grow. Currently, 16 states have renewable portfolio standards (RPS), which typically mandate that retail electricity suppliers must obtain a certain percentage of their sales from renewable sources. A number of these states allow renewable energy certificates to be traded independently of the underlying electricity. At Calpine, we believe that REC trading is an important factor in the development of renewable energy markets, not only because it increases market efficiency but also because it creates financial incentives for the development of more renewable generation capacity. Calpine’s RECs offer a cost-effective way for energy suppliers and wholesalers to gain the key benefits of renewable energy without having to make the immediate investments in their own green power.
