America’s Premier Competitive Power Company
... Creating Power for a Sustainable Future
The Baytown Energy Center is a natural gas-fired power plant
that incorporates combined-cycle and cogeneration technologies for highly
efficient operations. Located on
approximately 24 acres in Baytown, Texas, the plant consists of three
combustion turbines with three heat recovery steam generators that supply steam
to a steam turbine. The construction of
the plant was coordinated and managed by Calpine using a general contractor.
Baytown supplies the adjacent Covestro LLC plant with
all of the electricity and steam needed for its operations under a long-term contract. Calpine
markets the remaining electric power into the ERCOT wholesale power market
under a variety of short- and long-term contracts.
In 2003, Baytown Energy Center was recognized as a Showcase
Plant by the U.S. Department of Energy, the State of Texas and Texas Industries
of the Future. In 2009, the plant was
granted Bronze-level membership status in the Clean Texas Program, sponsored by
the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Clean Texas provides recognition for companies that serve as leaders
among Texas workplaces that seek to achieve significant environmental results,
create environmental awareness and protect air, water and land resources in
